Read their poems below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We had hundreds of entries from across the country and it was a great pleasure to read them all. You can read a review of the anthology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekidsbookscurator.com\/blog\/spin-10-exciting-new-voices-in-poetry\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h-Uzm0jJsjc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Pravan Kubavat<\/h3>\n<h4>My Sister<\/h4>\n<p>I like to be kind<br \/>\nAnd think in my mind<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s important to share<br \/>\nBecause I really care<\/p>\n<p>I hold my younger sister&#8217;s hand<br \/>\nI&#8217;m her favourite person in all the land<br \/>\nI help to feed her food<br \/>\nSo she&#8217;s never in a bad mood<\/p>\n<p>I like to put a smile on her face<br \/>\nAnd help do her tricky lace<br \/>\nI love being nice<br \/>\nBest thing, it doesn&#8217;t come at a price!!<\/p>\n<h3>Kyan Norris<\/h3>\n<h4>The Kind Boy<\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you a story and you will see<br \/>\nwhat kindness really means to me.<br \/>\nThe bully shoved the boy, to the ground,<br \/>\nthe boy was hurt and rolling around.<\/p>\n<p>An older child approached the scene.<br \/>\nHe did not tease, he wasn\u2019t mean.<br \/>\nInstead, he took the boy to a door,<br \/>\nwhen the boy came out, he wasn\u2019t sore.<\/p>\n<p>It was truly amazing what the child did that day,<br \/>\nhe put himself out in a very kind way.<\/p>\n<p>And I walked off, back through a hole.<br \/>\nA new light opened in my soul.<br \/>\nI know I think a bit out of the box.<br \/>\nBut after all, I am a fox.<\/p>\n<h3>Mattie Stone<\/h3>\n<h4>Friends<\/h4>\n<p>I get to school, the sadness on my shoulders.<br \/>\nHunch down low and feel the snow in the crowded playground.<br \/>\nI trudge along the gravel breathing in.<br \/>\nThoughts crash down as I hear my friends sing.<br \/>\nTheir words bring me encouragement, kindness, support and it helps.<br \/>\nWe link arms and walk along, heads held up high.<br \/>\nI feel the proudness fall into my heart.<br \/>\nTheir kindness lifts up my joys and explodes my worries.<br \/>\nSuch friends they are, such friends.<\/p>\n<h3>What does kindness mean to you? What does kindness look or feel like?<\/h3>\n<p>We asked children to write a poem on kindness for the opportunity to have their poem published by Otter-Barry Books!* This competition was judged by Waterstones\u2019 Children\u2019s Laureate Joseph Coelho.<\/p>\n<h3>RULES:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>You must be 5 &#8211; 11 years old<\/li>\n<li>Your poem must be no longer than 15 lines<\/li>\n<li>It must be an original poem you have written about kindness<\/li>\n<li>Only one poem is allowed to be submitted per entrant<\/li>\n<li>You must live in one of these London boroughs:<br \/>\nBrent, Bromley, Ealing, Greenwich, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Merton, Newham, Southwark, Sutton, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Meet the readers<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5833 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/applesandsnakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Readers-for-the-Comp-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/applesandsnakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Readers-for-the-Comp-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/applesandsnakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Readers-for-the-Comp-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/applesandsnakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Readers-for-the-Comp.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would like to thank and acknowledge the hard work of our competition readers who assisted in shortlisting the entries for judge Joseph Coelho to choose the winners:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nyanda Foday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was Birmingham\u2019s Young Poet Laureate 2016-2018, and is inspired by the impact that words can have to create, unite, explain and enjoy. She strives to connect with others where she can by sharing and listening to their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stanley Iyanu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a performance poet and writer from London. His spoken word poetry style has been described as having the \u201cgentle power of a slow ocean building. Before you know it, you\u2019ll be rocking hither and thither to his sirenic-voiced languid lullaby and loving every tidal second of it\u201d. His poems have been published in the Poetry Society magazine as well as internationally. He has performed across the UK, most notably for Apples &amp; Snakes, BBC Radio London and for the Cheltenham Literature Festival, his debut poetry pamphlet is called \u2018My Achilles\u2019 and is published by Burning Eye Press.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5391 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/applesandsnakes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Joseph-Coelho-Trio-for-Website.png\" alt=\"a trio of images. No matter how good your memory or how wonderful an idea or phrase is, if you don\u2019t jot it down as it occurs you\u2019re likely to forget it so carry a notepad and a pen.<\/li>\n<li>Explore poetic forms. Form can be a great way to explore a subject by giving you a creative restriction that often opens-up ideas and turns of phrase that you may never normally come up with.
